Greece and Britain in Women's Literary Imagination

The Society for Modern Greek Studies and the Modern Greek Section at the University of Cambridge are co-organising a one-day conference at Selwyn College, Cambridge, on Friday 12 April, with the title:

“Greece and Britain in women’s literary imagination, 1913-2013”

The conference will examine the work of British women novelists who have found their inspiration and subject matter in Greece, and novels by Greek women writers who have engaged with British settings and subjects. The authors to be discussed range from Rose Macaulay and Virginia Woolf to Olivia Manning, Victoria Hislop and Sofka Zinovieff on the British side; on the Greek side we shall engage with the work of Angela Dimitrakaki, Soti Triantafyllou and a number of other contemporary authors. We believe there is a rich vein of cultural interactions which have not been specifically examined and this conference will therefore be breaking new ground.

The keynote address will be given by Dr Vassiliki Kolocotroni (University of Glasgow). Other speakers include: Semele Assinder (University of Cambridge and the British School at Athens), Dr Thodoris Chiotis (Athens), Dr Keli Daskala (University of Crete), Professor Emerita Deirdre David (Temple University, Philadelphia), Dr Rowena Fowler (Oxford), Dr Eleni Papargyriou (King’s College London), Laura Vivanco (Edinburgh) and authors Soti Triantafyllou and Sofka Zinovieff. Professor Roderick Beaton will chair a round-table discussion.

The closing-date for registration is 5 April (and for accommodation and dinner 28 March). To download the full programme and to register, please go to:
